First DanceFirst Dance. Do you remember yours? DJ had his first
school dance… the Valentine Dance at his school. Just a dance,
not a formal or anything like that. A few weeks before the dance, I
figured it would be best to expose him to the social-phenomena of ritual-human
dancing, so… after a potluck at Troyworks…
we went to DanceHome in Santa Monica.
DanceHome is this cool thing! It is held in a dance studio and world-beat-ish music plays continuously. Being a dance studio, 2 of the 4 walls are mirrored. People go there and express themselves. People go there and have fun. There are no clicks. There are no ogglers ready to whisper judgments to their friends. It’s just people, dancing. Not knowing what it would be like at his school, just to be on the safe side… I wanted his first ‘dance’ experience to be as positive as possible. “See… it doesn’t have to be scary.” There was a big group of us, 12 total. DJ got out his poi and started dancing with those. After a long while, I took them away from him. I told him to go and ask Morrison to teach him a few steps. I thought he would be horrified, but he wasn’t. He went up to him and asked and Morrison obliged willingly. They sort have a bond as they both do Astrojacks. Eventually DJ asked for his poi back. After making sure he got the basics of groov’in, I gave them back. Less than a minute, he gave them back to me, saying that he was having too much fun dancing. <smile> mission accomplished! DJ
said his school dance was soo much fun, and that everyone was dancing.
