The Kid Can Cook

It was some morning during DJ’s holiday break and I could hear some rumblings in the kitchen. “Don’t even think it!”… I told myself, strictly. As has become habit when thoughts wander towards wishful imaginings. BRKVW and I slept in late. When we finally awoke, DJ says, “Finally, I didn’t think you guys were going to wake up!” He had made breakfast for us.

Scrambled eggs, pancakes and chocolate chip pancakes. Yum!

So, I asked DJ, what are some things you would like to learn how to make/cook? Pizza, Thai food, Indian curries. Cool. Every month we’ll make something new.
February he made Cashew Chicken Curry.
March: Baked Potatoes
April: Pork Chops with Mushroom Sauce
May: Clam Chowder
June: Penne Puttanesca
July: Pizza
August:: Watermelon and Mint Tea Sorbets
September: French Toast
October: Galub Julam
November: Pumpkin Flan
December: A Whole Dinner: Baked Chicken, Gravy, Stuffing, Salad, Carrots with Dill and Butterscotch Chip Cookies with Vanilla Ice Cream

This will be fun. It reminds me of when DJ was very little and curious about food prep, mainly- I think, because it led to eating. He likes to eat. He still likes to eat. Growing up, he had no ‘food issues’ like so many of the other kids we knew. His favorite food since he could answer the question, has been Indian.

For a number of years now, he has not taken an interest in cooking. This renewed interest is encouraging, and fits nicely with the ‘passing on of life skills’ part of parenting.
