Connections

Found an ad in the back of the Scientific America which caught my eye...
Science Connection. Yes, online personals ads for 'single people who work in or enjoy science or natural history.' There are sample photos and profiles to view. Joining this one does cost $. There seems to be some sorting ability, but not sophisticated. Overall, the site lacks sexiness. It is plain, and a little too cute. No style.

So I browsed around. From reading the sample profiles, practically everyone is looking for a mate. I have joined similar 'organizations' with the intent of meeting people [male/female] for friendship and have not had much success. While these arenas can cater to friendships, most don't join them for that. It's too bad.

I am completely honest in my profiles, saying I have a kid, in a great relationship, looking to make friends... gee must be a turn off. While I have approached and been approached by men and women, connections seem to fizzle. I get the feeling they didn't really read my profile, or realized their ulterior motives [fantasies? :)] would not be fulfilled by me. Whatever.

LJ is different in that it can offer a sense of connectedness~community. On one side I like it and think it is novel, on the other it feels like party-conversation with cheerleaders. It is moments like those that I miss real conversation and human touch. I'd take a couple of hours talking, over a cup of tea [or a vanilla vodka with lemonade] with a friend that ended with a hug than browsing lj, any day. I guess it is on days that I can't do that, I reach out to the keyboard.
