Maui No Ka Oi

I love being on Maui. It is comfortable, relaxing, and beautiful. When I am here, I feel like time has stopped to a certain degree, or at least slowed down, and I like that.

Some highlights of this trip:

Saw a cute indie movie, Suddenly Naked

Took naps.

Ate fresh fish.

Ate rose apples, guavas, strawberry guavas, apple bananas, papayas, lillikoi, and lychees. Some of these, I picked myself on Dr. Moreau's plantation.

Went swimming in a large black-bottomed pool, overlooking the Pacific Ocean almost every day. This pool has been filled with water from the catchment system, thus it is soft, rainwater, that feels luscious swimming through it.

Sat in hot Jacuzzi almost every night.

Learned how to hold a frog.

Saw Mars and a bunch of stars, almost every night.

Had great meals with great company.

Got to shop and only pay 4% tax!

Finished reading the book I started on the plane Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science by Atul Gawande
Excellent book. It is written by a surgeon, who understands the fallibility of humans, and that doctors are not without exemption. He is motivated by how things go wrong and how things go right. I get kind of queasy about the insides of humans and as such, reading this book was challenging. But now, I feel a bit better prepared to deal with an emergency or unusual medical situation.

Went to Oahu, to see a photographer friend of mine, and have some pictures taken of me. They are archery themed, sporty.

Went on a hike that followed a stream, and aqueduct to a pool to swim in. This hike has 2 suspension bridges, which I was not afraid to cross, just extremely cautious. I couldn't help thinking, what if I misstep? That added stress, actually made it fun to cross. At the waterhole, we jumped into bracing, cold, stream water. Even swam behind the waterfall. I am going to cheat :) see pics here: BRKVW's Swinging Bridges

Went to a Hawaiian Long Board Federation surf meet. My brother married the woman who runs these. They put on a number of surf meets a year, and we timed our trip to Maui so that we could check it out and have some family time, as they live on Oahu. [and who wants to go there? too much like a city!] DJ gets to reacquaint himself with his uncle and I get to laugh a lot as my brother and I have a similar sense of humor...juvenile.

And on the last day before departure, go to go to the beach. Ahhh!

We returned last week and I already miss Maui. The pace, the space, the tastes, the sweet smell of the air, the colors, being near the edges of day...even the simple things, like eating lunch and dinner every day with DJ and BRKVW. I am reminded of how good life can be.
